We know that going to the dentist can cause anxiety. Often children are anxious if they are in an unknown environment and don’t understand what is going on around them. We make it a priority to carefully explain what your child will be experiencing with us. We speak in age appropriate language and make sure to describe any and all sensations they may feel. If they are having their teeth cleaned for the first time, we will show them how the chair goes up and down. We will describe and demonstrate how the overhead light turns on and helps us see. We will let them touch and hear the toothbrush and suction tools before ever putting it in their mouth. We make sure to let the children see and smell the toothpaste and let them know the brush will tickle the teeth to remove the bugs.
Parental encouragement is important during a first visit. Children will cue how to respond from you. If you are confident and encouraging, they will feel more at ease.

Children and Their Dental Health
Children should come to the dentist as soon as their first tooth erupts and no later than their first birthday. It is a common myth that baby teeth don’t need to be cared for because they will be lost—this is not true. The bacteria that cause cavities remains in the oral environment even after baby teeth are lost. Taking care of your child’s teeth from the beginning is vital for their long-term health.
Make sure you are brushing your child’s teeth for them until the age of six. Prior to age six, children do not have the dexterity to brush on their own. Diet is extremely important in controlling dental decay. Avoid sugary juices, sticky candies and starchy or sugary foods before bedtime. Brush and floss their teeth twice a day and avoid putting them to bed with a sippy cup or bottle.
Dental decay is the #1 preventable, chronic disease in children—five times higher than asthma. The bacteria that cause decay are transmissible and do not go away simply by filling teeth. If you as a caregiver have tooth decay, avoid sharing utensils, cups or kissing on the mouth in order to prevent spreading the disease to your child.
